In recent times, the Manzanita Recreation Center has never shone more brightly than it did for the visit of our Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey. On Thursday, January 26th she attended a special meeting of the MCCSD Board to view a presentation about the planned Marin City Center complex project including a report on the progress made to date.

The MCCSD’s planners, Clint and Lia Bolden of Bocart & Associates, showed a PowerPoint presentation with pre-visualizations of the preliminary site designs and an overview of the overall project plan and status. Also participating in the discussion that followed was 3rd District Supervisor Charles McGlashan, who has been a major proponent in supporting the Marin City Center project mission.

MCCSD board president Melvin Atkins lead the meeting, which included all four current board members, namely; Terrie Harris-Green, Hazlitt Krog and Derek Morgan. Sausalito Marin City School District board member Robert Fisher participated. Also present was staff from the Congresswoman’s and the Supervisor’s offices. The audience also included most of the MCCSD staff and a number of community representatives.

Both the Congresswoman and Supervisor reiterated their strong support for the fundraising required to complete the Marin City Center project. Woolsey commented that she believes it is projects like the Marin City Center that strengthen our communities and truly keep us a secure nation. She stated, “I consider this a pet project. I want to see it accomplished.” McGlashan had already prepared a memorandum for federal funding which would cover the cost of completing the planning and fundraising stage as well as cost for the initial construction phase.

District Manager Johnathan Logan, Jr. presented small gifts to the Congresswoman and Supervisor including “Honorary Member of the Marin City Rec” tee shirts that were prepared by Paul Austin Jr., Coordinator of Recreation Programs.

CSD Vice President Terrie Harris-Green gave a brief closing statement thanking the elected officials for their strong showing of commitment. She reiterated the vision of the Marin City Center as a symbol of promise for Marin City. She reminded everyone of the Board’s determination to make every possible effort to go beyond the plans thus far and turn the vision into a reality.

After the main meeting came to a close, District Manager Logan led the entire group on a facilities tour. The group visited the partially constructed Marin City Heath and Wellness Clinic facility in the West wing of the Manzanita Center. Other stops included the boxing gym, main gymnasium, kitchen, teen zone, and fireside room.

During the tour, the Congresswoman commented on the need for larger facilities when the new buildings are built.

The tour was over after viewing some of the grounds on the five-acre property. “Now that we have recruited a fine staff and have everyone working so well together, we welcome visitors and visits like this,” said Atkins. He continued, “this was a special occasion and we really appreciate Congresswoman Woolsey, Supervisor McGlashan and their staffs taking time out from their busy schedules to make this visit with us. It was a very productive meeting.”
