About the Marin City Community Services District
Although we have "city" in our name, the Marin City Community Services District (MCCSD) is an unincorporated California Special District in the County of Marin serving an area just under a square mile in size. It is located south of both the Tamalpais Community Services District and the City of Mill Valley, northwest of the City of Sausalito, west of Richardson Bay (an estuary of San Francisco Bay), and east of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area's Marin Headlands (an 8,000 acre parkland along the Pacific coastline).
As the local government for Marin City, the MCCSD is directed by its five elected public officials and administered by its district manager and staff. We are guided by our Vision Statement. The District is responsible for providing services in the areas of parks and recreation, street lighting, recycling and refuse removal, and other powers and responsibilities as activated under LAFCO, defined in our charter of 1958 and governed under the California Government Code.
As the crow flies, Marin City is less than three miles from the Pacific Ocean. Our prevailing westerly winds makes our air is always pure and fresh, having traveled thousands of miles across vast ocean expanses before flowing over the undeveloped sage-covered hills and valleys of the Marin Headlands to reach us. During the summer months, the coastal weather is frequently 10 to 20 degrees cooler in Marin City than it is a few miles to the east. Therefore, Marin City homeowners don't need to install air conditioning, saving substantially on summer electrical bills.
The 2000 Census listed 2,560 people living in Marin City. Our current population estimate is over 3,000. Marin City is proud to have one of the most diverse demographics of Marin County. We are a friendly community that welcomes new residents and visitors with open arms. The MCCSD is always looking for volunteers to help with it's programs.
Our total operating revenue for fiscal year 2005-2006 was $613,000. We weclome your help in supporting our efforts to increase the District's revenues so that we can provide superior services to help make Marin City the best it can be.
Marin City was created during World War II as a temporary town to house 6,000 of the 20,000 workers employed at the Marinship shipyard that was located along the northern portion of the Sausalito waterfront. In a bowl of land surrounded by steep hills that had previously been pastureland, and up an adjacent ridge, the Maritime Commission and the Federal Housing Authority rapidly constructed a community of houses, apartments, dormitories, stores and a school just across the highway from the shipyard. Within a year, Marin City became the second largest city in Marin County. Chartered as a multi-purpose special district in 1958, Marin City is part of the 3rd Supervisorial District of Marin County. Our supervisor is Charles McGlashan.
